Parameters: Create a collectable deck of cards and customized packaging. 

Proposal: I have always been a fan of rap music and thought that it was my chance to apply some of my personal interests into my work. This was also the first time I used hand lettering as a prominent element in my composition. I contrasted the free flowing nature of the hand drawings by creating geometric symbols to help separate the visual planes. The Kings were inspired by the four regions of American rap: North (Kanye West: Chicago, IL)  / East (Notorious B.I.G: Brooklyn, NY) / South (Lil Wayne: New Orleans, LA) / West (Tupac Shakur: Los Angeles, CA).

Parameters: Create an eight page booklet exploring themes and the history of Disney’s Newsies. Distributed among education department and community night.

Proposal: I was inspired by the newspaper format and created a grid system that emphasized every headline and photograph. The goal was to create a piece for youth audience members to take home and study after the show.

PARAMETERS: Create a book design comprised of a cover, inside cover, title page, chapter break, & copy spread.

PROPOSAL: I decided to utilize a photographic approach to create the framework of the composition. The acid-infused pallete creates a senseless setting for the world of the greasers. I chose to emphasize the famed quote to entice fans and future readers alike. Lastly, I used circles as a nod to the unique ending of the book. Spoiler alert: the end is the beginning.

PARAMETERS: Create a design system for a music event. You must include a poster, postcard, website face, mobile application face, brochure and additional item of your choosing.

PROPOSAL: The biggest hurdle I had with this project was the amount of required text on the poster. Once I worked through the hierarchy and created a consistent way to break up the information, I began to focus on the interaction between the linear graphics and haphazard texture. I also utilized a progression of color based on the audiences interaction with each piece.

PARAMETERS: Create a monthly publication for the creative class of Sacramento. The magazine must feature five articles, three advertisements, and one application of an infographic. All content must be produced by a group and adapted into individual magazines.

PROPOSAL: As a group, ELEVATE focused itself on the importance of community. To extend that notion into the composition, I used a lot of heavy photography on two-page spreads to help make the audience feel that they are part of the photograph. I also wanted to play up the isomorphic correspondence to create an immediate reaction from the audience. I paced the magazine strategically so that it leaves the audience affirming themselves that they can do it too.

Parameters: Create a website illustrating a chosen poem. 

Proposal: For this project, I chose to use The Cunning Optimism of Language by Bob Hicok. I wanted to evoke the consumption of self-doubt. I illustrated a kind of creature that engulfs the reader and the main character.

Parameters: Create illustrated show art intended for Music Circus 2016 

Proposal: I was tasked with creating illustrations of main characters in each production. With that in mind, I focused on what traits I wanted to bring to the forefront. For Cabaret, I wanted the focal point to be his smirk and gesture. While the show is filled with darker themes of 1960’s Berlin, his face becomes a symbol of refuge for outcasts from a city on the verge of war. For Hello, Dolly!, I wanted to focus on the idea of match-making and meddling. In a more comical extreme, I wanted Dolly to be in total control, just like the gusto she evokes in the show.
